神代文字は、江戸時代から近現代まで一部の信奉者によって古代の文字（漢字伝来以前の日本固有の文字）であると信じられており、神代文字に関する書籍についても、非学術的なものが大半を占める。本研究課題は、近世の偽作である神代文字資料に着目することで近世以降の学問史、宗教史、あるいは政治史のなかで神代文字を捉え直し、それが昭和戦時期に興隆を見せた思想的背景を明らかにすることを目的としている。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
We have focused on the importance of the Jindai-moji, which have long been excluded from the history of research.
From the Edo period to the modern era, Jindai-moji has been believed by some believers to be an ancient script (a script unique to Japan before the introduction of Chinese characters), and the majority of books on Jindai-moji have been non-academic. This research aims to reconsider the Jindai-moji in the context of academic, religious, and political history since the early modern period by focusing on the Jindai-moji materials, which are early modern forgeries, and to clarify the ideological background of its rise in the Showa period.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
寺院資料の調査をしているチームが対象とする資料は、多くが前近代のものであり、目録作成と大まかな寺院の実体解明が主となっている。特に荒唐無稽な偽書扱いをされている神代文字資料にいたっては悉皆調査では見向きもされず、神代文字信奉者である松本善之助が『合本ほつま』（日本翻訳センター、2013年）などで一部紹介しているに留まっているのが現状であり、近世以降の思想史として考察・分析には及んでいなかった。本研究課題では、寺院所蔵の文献調査に精通した研究者のほか、近世以降の新興宗教や政治史に長けた研究者の協力を得ることで、神代文字資料の重要性を学界に示すことができた。
