Outline of Research at the Start

中性子電気双極子モーメント(EDM)を探索することにより、時間反転対称性の破れを検証する。CPT保存を仮定すれば時間反転対称性の破れはCP対称性の破れを意味する。中性子EDMの探索を通して、現在の物質優勢宇宙の起源を探る。
中性子EDMの測定は静電磁場中に閉じ込められた超冷中性子の歳差運動の様子を精密に観測することで行われる。我々はカナダのグループと共同でTRIUMFに世界最高強度の超冷中性子源を建設することにより、現状を1 桁以上上回る精度での探索を行い、中性子電気双極子モーメントの発見を目指す。

Outline of Final Research Achievements

Ultra-cold neutrons (UCNs), which have extremely low kinetic energy, are used in the search for the neutron electric dipole moment (EDM). In this research, we have developed a cryogenic system capable of maintaining superfluid helium, used as a UCN converter, at an ultra-low temperature of approximately 1.0 K (-272°C), even under a substantial heat load of 10 W. Furthermore, we have constructed a magnetic shielding room that reduces external magnetic field fluctuations to less than 1/10,000, which is essential for precise EDM measurements.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

中性子EDMの存在は、現在の物質・反物質の非対称性の起源を明らかにする可能性がある。中性子EDM測定には非常に低エネルギーの中性子で物質容器中に閉じ込めることができる超冷中性子を用いる。超冷中性子を大量に発生し、高精度にコントロールされた磁場環境で計測することで、現状より1桁高い制度での中性子EDMを観測することが可能となる。また、微小な相互作用を測定するのに適した超冷中性子は様々な基礎物理実験にも用いられる。
