| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This study aimed to elucidate interethnic similarities and differences in the brain networks underlying social cognition and to establish a globally standardized awake brain surgery that preserves these functions. Through a combination of statistical neuroimaging, resting-state functional MRI, and intraoperative monitoring, we identified specific brain regions and subcortical networks involved in the understanding of joy and sadness. Notably, a trade-off relationship between the posterior prefrontal cortex and medial orbitofrontal cortex was revealed. We also developed an Asian version of the "Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test (RME-T)" in collaboration with international partners. Comparative analysis showed significantly lower performance in the Western version among Japanese participants. These findings underscore the importance of culturally adapted intraoperative assessments and support the development of surgical strategies tailored to diverse populations.
