Research Abstract |
Substance use by young people has proven to be a rapidly changing phenomenon, requiring frequent assessment and reassessments. In this study, we had conducted nationwide epidemiologic surveys in Japan, Korea and Vietnam to monitor substance use by Asian young people. We had archived the data Summary of key findings is as follows: (1) Cigarette and alcohol showing consistent declines in use among young people in Japan between 2004 and 2009 . Lifetime prevalence rate of smoking anddrinking in 2009 were 13.1% and 56.7%, respectively. (2) Illicit drugs also decline in use among Japanese youth. The lifetime prevalence rates of Illicit drugs use in 2009 were 1.1% in males and 0.6% in females, respectively. (3) The prevalence rates illicit drugs use among Asian youth were significantly low compared with those of the USA and European countries. (4) Almost all Japanese youth had understood the risk of substance use and had disapproval attitude against substance use.
