Research Abstract |
Based on our unique survey on 1100 households in Laos and the financial climate of 103 credit unions, we revealed that the motives of savings and borrowing differ according to the stage of economic development and that a surplus funds issue comes critical for some of credit unions in developed areas. We also compared the union movement between Japan and Thailand and found that the landlord class played a critical role in Japan. In addition, we organized a workshop at Vientiane to disseminate our results to those who are concerned with credit union movementin Laos including Central Bank of Lao.
