Research Abstract |
The aim of this study is to delineate the way that people living in Okinawa who took part in the Tokyo Olympics (1964), National Athletic Meets (in 1973 and 1987), and high school baseball tournaments have constructed their identities as "Okinawan people" and as "Japanese people." It is necessary to consider differences in the characteristics held by those from Okinawa as opposed to those from the mainland (Tokyo) when looking at the complex and multifaceted meaning of the cultural phenomenon of sports.
