Research Abstract |
The "Genealogy of Kumiudui" project spans a wide range, considering the history of Ryukyuan/Okinawan performing arts form the early 18th century to the present. The project also covers the National Theatre of Okinawa, which was built in 2004, and 20 Shinsaku Kumiudui by Oshiro Tatsuhiro. One significant result of this project was the organization of two symposiums, attended by several eminent scholars of Kumiudui, Noh, folk theatre, Ryukyu-dance, Ryukyu-music, and Shakespeare along with the art director of the' National Theatre of Okinawa' and the director of ' The Okinawan Drama Experimental Theatre'. Toma Ichiro and Amano Fumio gave the keynote address at each symposium. In addition, Oshiro's ten Shinsaku kumiudui productions have revealed some retrospective insight on the genealogy of Kumiudui, which brought unprecedented enlightenment beyond the first aim of this project.
