Research Abstract

The American books selected by GHQ for postwar occupied Japan reflected the US’ s ideal self-image that the country wished to construct as the Cold War strategy. The western frontier image was particularly utilized for the construction of the ideal national image. The Japanese readers accepted the translated American books with admiration, while interpreting them for their own benefits.The different ways of interpretation of the books show that the books worked as a battle field for the two nations’ construction of their national self and the fact that the books played significant political roles and functions in the postwar era.
