We used fMRI to examine subjects in sleep-deprived and well-rested states to examine the effects of sleep deprivation on neural activity related to emotional facial and pain expression processing, predicting that activity in MNS and empathy related brain areas would be significantly affected. The results showed that viewing fearful facial expressions and pain expressions significantly activated in insula related to emotion processing following sleep deprivation.
