The aim of this study is to elucidate mechanisms for extending the distribution of subtropical Sargassum species along the western coast of Kyusyu island. Results obtained in this study indicated that subtropical Sargassum species had a better ability to regenerate from a grazed holdfast, and were interior in light competition than temperate Sargassum species. Removal of temperate Sargassum comuunity by higher grazing pressure should be necessary to extend the distribution of subtropical Sargassum species.
