Research Abstract

This study focus on product patents introduced in Japan in 1976, and examines how the introduction of product patents influence R&D activity of fims. I use Japanese patents and U.S. patent to control the expansion of protection scope and the promotion of R&D. The sample is Japanese Chemical major firm. I find that Japanese patents don't increase after the introduction of product patents, but U.S. patents increase.
