Research Abstract |
Recent epidemiological studies have shown a correlation between periodontitis and hyperlipidemia. The levels of OxLDL (oxidized low-density lipoproteins) and inflammatory cytokines in human GCF (gingival crevicular fluid) were measured by ELISA and cytometric bead array, respectively. The level of OxLDL is positively correlated with IL-8 and IL-1β levels in GCF. OxLDL increased IL-8 and PGE_2 (prostagrandin E2) production in gingival epithelial cells. OxLDL enhanced IL-8 production in gingival epithelial cells, which may contribute to the inflammatory reaction in periodontitis.
