| Outline of Research at the Start |
本研究は、明治以降のアイヌの社会と文化について、アイヌが用いた漆器を通して検討するものである。いわばアイヌ文化を「モノ」と「文書」の両面からたどる試みである。そのため、a文書史料、b絵画・映像資料の調査・検討、c現有漆器の観察調査（形状、色調、技法等の検討）、d漆器の科学分析（剥落した塗膜片・木胎片の科学分析等）という、文理融合の四つの手法によるアプローチを試みる。それらの成果の統合によって、近代の北海道からサハリンに至るアイヌの社会と文化の様相について明らかにしていく。つまり、総体として近代、とりわけ「北海道旧土人保護法」下におけるアイヌ民族の有した文化的力量を明らかにする研究である。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
We believe that we have largely achieved the purpose of this research project, which was to examine the society and culture of the Ainu people in modern times, mainly through shikki(lacquerware). Among these, a major achievement was the identification and analysis of the age and place of origin of Ainu shikki owned by the Makubetsu Town Ezo-bunnka-kokokann Museum, and the scientific analysis of lacquerware excavated from Chiashkotan Island in the northern Kuril Islands. As for the achievements of historical documents, they have contributed to the accumulation of modern Ainu history, which had surprisingly little results, and contributed to the theory of the early modern/modern transition period. The analysis of Ainu paintings has revealed the changes in the relationship between the Ainu and the Wjin (Japanese people). Demonstrated results can be presented. Overall, we are proud of our achievements as a major step forward in research on materials related to the Ainu.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
北海道内の博物館等の所蔵漆器の年代と産地、地域性の差異を、明確にしたことである。帯広・幕別などの日高山脈以東の道東地域と、以西の日高地域等では伝世漆器の特徴が異なっており、地域的な差異が存在することが判明した。さらに一時的に下火になるものの、近代以降戦前に至るまで、連綿としてアイヌ向けの漆器が特注されていたことを明らかにした。緑漆行器の実在を初めて確認するという成果もあった。加えて、個別実証研究の必要が叫ばれつつも、意外に成果に乏しかった近代アイヌ史の蓄積への貢献と、近世・近代移行期論に寄与した点を成果としてあげたい。青森県内の民俗資料とアイヌ伝世漆器との共通性の発見も附言したい。
