Outline of Research at the Start

砂漠化の拡大が懸念されるモンゴル・中国北部の乾燥地域はかつては湖沼地帯であったことが地質から分かっている。ここを主たる研究対象に,環境システムがどのように機能して乾燥化をもたらすに至ったのかを解明するため(1)流域の陸水データや大気環境の観測体制の整備(2)気候要素や地域の水利用,後背地の堆積物供給能力等の地理地形学的調査(3)降水量をもたらす雲凝結核・氷晶核たり得る有機物調査(4)気候及び環境変化に関する歴史資試料収集(5)湖沼堆積物コアの取得・分析による古環境変動解明を行う。

Outline of Final Research Achievements

Aridification and desertification are serious problem in the interior of the Asian continent. Considering that lakes and their catchment is one environment system, comprehensive analyses of lake water, lacustrine sediments and basement rocks and overlying sediments in the catchment were carried out to understand the current environmental system and past environmental changes. The rate of basement erosion in the catchment area was generally consistent with the rate of sedimentation in the lake, indicating the system is essentially closed in the geologically long term. The analyses of lake sediment core revealed the effects of global climate and local river channel changes. The lake development history was independently investigated with the lake water quality (salinity), and the results was consistent. Based on these results, we proposed that the enhanced rock weathering to fix the carbon dioxide is an effective countermeasure against the global warming in this region.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

本研究は乾燥地域における環境システムを明らかにし,地学的な分析結果を用いて環境変動史をどのように再構築できるかの方法論の提示を行った。また環境変動史は地域の人々の歴史とも分かち難くリンクしていることを示し,歴史に環境が果たす役割の重要性を示した。湖水の化学組成の研究が湖盆の発達史の研究と関連づけられ,堆積物の分析結果と整合的であること,および後背地の岩石の研究と堆積物の研究成果も整合的であることなど,異なる分野・異なる視点での研究を融合させたところに学術的意義がある。また分析結果に基づき温暖化に対する対策を提言しており社会的にも意義のある成果を挙げることができた。
