Outline of Research at the Start

地球の水素は、地表の海洋や氷をつくる水に加えて、地球内部の鉱物が含む水素イオンとしても存在する。不均質に分布するこれらの水素イオンは、鉱物の流動特性、潤滑特性、融解温度への影響を通して、地震火山現象や固体の対流の原因をつくりだす。これらの水素イオンの振る舞いを、中性子結晶学と局所質量分析の手法により、原子のスケールで調べる。多様な鉱物内部での水素イオンの配置、濃度、移動度を系統的に解析して、それらの相関関係の物理を世界に先駆けて確立する。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

地球の水素は海洋水に加えて、地球内部の鉱物の結晶構造を置換する水素イオンとしても存在する。地球内部の水素量は海洋水を大きく超えると考えられるが、その分布は非常に不均質で、総量はよくわかっていない。一方で水素は鉱物の流動特性、潤滑特性、融解温度への強い影響を通して地震火山現象等の地学的現象を誘発しており、その理解を進めることは急務である。本課題の目的は、中性子結晶学と局所質量分析によってこの鉱物中の水素の性質を原子のスケールで理解することである。
当該年度においては、地球の下部マントルの最重要構成鉱物であるブリッジマナイトの結晶構造中の水素の配置と占有率を、単結晶中性子回折法を主力とする複数の水素解析手法を組み合わせて最終的に決定し、論文を報告した(Purevjav et al., American Mineralogist, 2024)。ブリッジマナイトの水素は、従来から研究者間の理解の食い違いが甚だしかった問題であるが、我々は鉱物の微量の水素に対する中性子回折法の応用に世界で初めて成功し、その結果、アルミニウムと鉄を含む典型的なブリッジマナイトがH2O換算で約0.1重量%の水素を結晶構造中に含むこと、および水素の総容量が下部マントル全体で海洋水の2倍程度になることを示した。
当該年度はさらに、含水シリカガラスを0.5-1 GPaの圧力条件で合成し、X線と中性子を併用したその構造データの取得を実現した。ガラスには特定の水素イオンの置換サイトがなく、その構造変化の特徴を捉えるためには、複数の含水量の試料を作り分けた上で、解析の結果を互いに比較する必要がある。そのためにガラス内での拡散を利用した非融解条件の合成と、液相を急冷する融解条件の合成を並行して進めた上で、得た試料をSPring-8とJ-PARCで相補的に解析した。その結果、ガラスの含水素による構造変化の特徴を明確に捉えた。

Reason

当該年度までに、ブリッジマナイトへの単結晶中性子回折法の先端的な応用によって、H2O換算で約0.1重量の微少量の水素についての構造解析を成功させ、成果を国際学術誌において報告した。併せて含水シリカガラスについて、非融解から融解に至る複数の実験条件においてそれぞれ複数含水量の合成を行い、放射光実験と中性子散乱実験を併せた相補的な構造データの取得を実現し、含水素による構造変化の特徴を捉えた。以上の理由により、全体としての進捗状況はおおむね順調である。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

含水シリカガラスの合成実験の条件をさらに多様化させ、複数の含水量を有する試料を系統的に得るとともに、含重水シリカガラスの最適な合成条件を導く。得られたガラスそれぞれに対する局所質量分析を行い、含水量・含重水量およびその不均質の有無を定量する。均質な含重水シリカガラスについて精密な中性子回折実験を行い、良い構造データを取得した上で、三次元構造モデリングの手法を取り入れた構造解析を行い、水素による構造変化の特徴を明らかにする。
