Outline of Research at the Start

学習時間は英語習得の成否を決める重要な指標の1つであり、教室内だけでなく、教室外でも学習時間を確保することが喫緊の課題である。教室外には学習を妨げる誘惑が多々あり、また、遠隔学習が普及し教室外学習の機会が増加しつつある現在、問題はより深刻である。このような状況にもかかわらず、英語学習者による教室外学習の実態研究は少なく、彼らの学習意欲・学習行動に影響を及ぼす状況と要因が不明である。そのため、本研究では、人の思考・感情・行動等を記録する「経験サンプリング法」を用いて、大学生を対象に、教室外における学習意欲・学習行動に影響を及ぼす状況と要因を明らかにし、学習意欲・学習行動メカニズムの解明を目指す。

Outline of Final Research Achievements

This study explored how university students perceived the need for using and learning English outside the classroom, as well as the factors influencing this perception. The analysis revealed that English majors tended to deepen their engagement with English through classroom activities. In contrast, non-English majors were also influenced by out-of-class factors such as English tests and their social surroundings. In addition, a psychological intervention that encouraged students to envision themselves using English helped them maintain their awareness of the need to study English. These findings highlight the importance of both classroom-related and external experiences in shaping students’ perceptions of English learning. They also underscore the value of encouraging meaningful out-of-class opportunities and environments that support continued engagement with English.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

本研究は、英語学習において教室内外の要因が、日常における英語使用・学習の必要性の認識に与える影響を明らかにし、動機づけ研究に新たな視点を提供した。特に、「自己イメージ」の活性化が英語への関心を維持する可能性を示し、内的動機形成の重要性を示唆した点に学術的意義がある。また、授業以外での経験や心理的介入が英語との関わりを促すことから、教育実践や政策において、教室外学習の支援を強化する必要性が示唆される。これらの知見は、学習者の持続的な動機づけの促進するうえで有用である。
