| Outline of Research at the Start |
１９００年代から現在に至る初等・中等教育における考古学的活動を再評価し、学校考古学史として日本考古学史に位置付けることを目的とする。再評価においては、郷土史、学校教育史、学校教材史など多角的な視点を導入する。学校考古学の社会的および学問的有効性を歴史的に証明することができ、現在の段階を客観視することが可能となる。これにより初等・中等教育での考古学的活動の将来的展望を指し示すことにもつながる。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The aim of this study is to re-evaluate archaeological activities in secondary schools from the 1900s to the present from the perspectives of ①people (students, teachers and researchers), ②activities (classes and club activities) and ③objects (school materials). The archaeological activities of the Paleologist Tsunoda Bun-ei at the old junior and senior high schools and the training he received from young researchers such as Yamauchi Sugao are reconstructed from his diary. Database of 1671 cases of club excavations from 1927 to 2013 are compiled. School materials include archaeological and anthropological model specimens, and an all-encompassing survey in Japan and Taiwan. In particular, the actual state of the Inoue-style geo-historical specimens produced and sold by the Hakata doll maker Inoue Seisuke is clarified.
This completed the basic research for the construction of a school archaeological history.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
考古学・人類学模型標本の大半は、坪井正五郎、岩井武俊、山内清男、杉原荘介ら研究者が監修しており、最新の研究成果を社会に還元する媒体として重要であった。大量生産品や実物でないことから、学校所在資料の中では廃棄の対象となりやすかった模型資料であるが、価値を顕在化することで、専門家や学芸員などへの警鐘となる。模型標本はまた、遺物や遺跡の全体がわかるため、土器片など実物資料に比べて教材として活用しやすい。研究者の多くが、中・高等学校での考古学的活動に関わった経験を有していることから、人材確保や技術継承の課題を抱える日本考古学界において、初等・中等教育段階から普及・実践することの有効性が確認できた。
