アメリカにおいて宗教保守、とくに福音主義は、トランプ前大統領の岩盤支持層であるという報道が日本でもしばしばなされた。しかし、そうした福音主義、あるいは宗教保守一般は、一体どのような思想から成り立っているのか、必ずしも日本では十分に理解されてきていない。そのために、この点における日本のアメリカ理解は、いまだ表層的なものにとどまっているのが現状である。そこで本研究は、宗教保守を社会的背景から外在的に説明するのではなく、その主要な思想家や知識人の主張を環大西洋的視点から歴史的に考察することをつうじて、宗教保守の内在的な論理を明らかにすることを目指す。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This study aimed to examine religious conservatism in the United States primarily (1) from the perspective of intellectual studies and (2) grounded in a transatlantic framework. Initially, it was hypothetically assumed that the study would focus on evangelicalism. However, by prioritizing (1) and advancing the research, it concluded that Catholic intellectuals mainly lead the restructuring of conservatism in America at the level of conservative intellectuals. Furthermore, through its research, the study concluded that it is appropriate to include Peter Thiel, widely known as a venture capitalist, as one of those leading the restructuring of American conservatism as a religious conservative. Regarding (2), the study concluded that the networking of religious conservative intellectuals across the transatlantic region is closely intertwined.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
2024年のアメリカ大統領選を控え、アメリカ国内の価値観の変化や、複数の価値観の間の対立の構図を把握することは、アメリカ研究において重要な課題である。本研究はこの課題に、知識人研究という観点からアプローチを試みた。SNSの普及した今日にあっても、価値や理念を体系的に構築する知識人の重要性はアメリカにおいて失われてはおらず、かれらの動向や主張を研究の対象とすることは、広義のアメリカ政治の動向を把握することに資することを示した。
