第二次世界大戦後、アメリカは冷戦構造の中でアジアへの関わりを深めていったが、同時にアジアの共産化とナショナリズムに直面し、力の外交と並行して学術界も動員してアジア内部からも戦略的文化政策を推し進める必要に迫られた。なかでも政治的に重要であったのは膨大な数の華僑華人の存在である。本研究は、「アジア財団」の助成戦略と活動を、華僑華人研究助成を事例にして具体的に跡づけ、華僑華人をめぐる知の基盤形成戦略を冷戦という国際関係の文脈から検討する。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
By reviewing the “Overseas Chinese” files in the Asia Foundation archives, it is found that the Foundation’s interest in overseas Chinese began with its predecessor, the Committee for Free Asia, which recognized the need for an integrated program to engage Chinese communities outside mainland China. While early efforts of the Foundation focused on Hong Kong and Taiwan, by the late 1950s, its policy had shifted toward locally oriented programs that would support the integration of Chinese communities into their host societies.

アジア財団側のアーカイブ資料を丹念に掘りおこし、さらに助成の受け手の側の記録と相互に連関させることにより、冷戦期アメリカのアジアにおける反共活動の多様性を理解し、多面的なアジア知識社会学の形成に貢献することが期待される。冷戦期のCIAの政治的関与の一端を明らかにし、華僑華人研究やアジア研究の領域での学知の歴史性、政治性、国際性について理解を深める一助となるのではないか。
