Outline of Research at the Start

Outline of Final Research Achievements

In recent years, it has been suggested that psychological perspective-taking and visuospatial perspective-taking may share a common underlying mechanismーmental body transformation, in which one's bodily representation is mentally transformed to the target person's viewpoint. In this study, two methods known to facilitate visuospatial perspective-taking were applied to facilitate psychological perspective-taking, and their effects were examined. The results partially supported the hypothesis that psychological perspective-taking becomes easier when (1) the angular disparity between oneself and the target is minimized, and (2) the body posture is congruent with the movement required to reach the target’s physical position. These findings suggest that mental body transformation may also be partially involved in psychological perspective-taking. However, further research is needed to determine it.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
