Outline of Research at the Start

物質を構成する最小単位である素粒子の振る舞いは,今日,標準模型と呼ばれる特殊相対性理論と量子力学からなる場の量子論に基づく模型によって,精度良く記述される.しかしながら,この模型は,宇宙における観測から,その存在が強く示唆されている暗黒物質を含んでいないため,拡張する必要がある.
そこで,本研究では,現在,人工的に作り出せ,その性質を観測可能な素粒子としては,最も重いトップクォークの生成過程に着目する.そして,その過程に寄与し得る標準模型の枠組みを超えた物理の観測可能性を理論的に可能な限り一般性を保ちつつ調査する.

Outline of Final Research Achievements

The top quark is an extremely heavy elementary particle. At the initial collision energy planned for the International Linear Collider (ILC), which is expected to be constructed in Japan, it is not possible to produce a top-quark pair but only single-top production is feasible. If such single top-quark production is observed, it may indicate the contribution of phenomena that are difficult to explain within the framework of the Standard Model of particle physics. In particular, flavor-changing neutral currents (FCNC), which allow a particle to change its type without altering its electric charge, may contribute to such processes. The observation of these processes would provide an important clue to the existence of new physics beyond the Standard Model. This study analyzes the possibility of such processes using computer simulations, exploring new approaches to uncover physics beyond the Standard Model.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

本研究は,トップクォークの単一生成過程に注目し,標準模型では極めて抑制されるFlavor-Changing Neutral Current(FCNC)の検出可能性をシミュレーションにより検討したものである.得られた成果は,標準模型を超える新たな物理現象の存在を探る手がかりとなり,素粒子物理学における標準模型の理論的拡張に寄与する学術的意義を有する.また,日本が中心となって推進する国際リニアコライダー(ILC)の科学的価値を多面的に示すことにもつながり,今後の大型加速器計画に対する社会的理解と関心の促進にも貢献し得る.
