Outline of Research at the Start

動物と共生する微生物叢は、宿主の生理機能に様々な役割を果たしており、そのひとつが動物の成長を支える代謝産物(栄養素)の供給である。本研究では、自然界でショウジョウバエの幼虫の成長に必須の役割を担う共生酵母・共生細菌に着目し、微生物叢が供給する幼虫の成長を支える栄養素の同定と、その栄養素が個体成長を支える分子機構や宿主―微生物叢間で成り立つ代謝系の理解を目指す。

Outline of Final Research Achievements

Animals live in association with diverse microbiota, and these microbes have a significant impact on host growth. For example, wild Drosophila larvae feed on fermented fruit, which contains various fungi - including ascomycetous yeasts - and bacteria. These symbiotic microbes play essential roles in larval development, but it remains unclear which microbial species are responsible and how they contribute to larval growth. In this study, we analyzed the microbiota associated with natural food sources consumed by wild Drosophila larvae and identified key microbial species, as well as interspecies interactions among microbes, that support larval growth. Furthermore, we uncovered part of the yeast-mediated nutrient supply mechanism (Mure et al., eLife, 2023).

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

近年、動物の発生過程における共生微生物の寄与が注目されています。本研究では、数種から数十種と比較的少数の微生物種からなるシンプルな共生微生物叢を持つショウジョウバエを用いることで、個別の微生物種が果たす役割の一端を明らかにしました。さらに、本研究成果は、これまであまり注目されてこなかった酵母が微生物叢機能に大きな役割を担うことを示唆しています。哺乳類の微生物叢は、ショウジョウバエに比べてはるかに多様な微生物種から構成されており、共生酵母の役割についても知見は限られています。本研究の成果は、ヒトを含む哺乳類における、より複雑な微生物叢の機能理解に向けた足がかりとなることが期待されます。
