Outline of Research at the Start

Outline of Final Research Achievements
In this study, we directly recorded from the axon terminals of exceptionally large hippocampal mossy fibers (4-7 microns in diameter) using a subcellular patch clamp, and combined this with simulations based on the latest mathematical models that mimic mossy fibers to examine the mechanism of ectopic spike generation in distal axons, identify the site of ectopic spike generation by uncaging experiment, and analyze mathematical models of ectopic spikes by simulation. The mechanism of ectopic spike generation in distal axons was examined to identify the site of spike generation and to analyze with the mathematical model by simulation. It was shown that potassium channel inhibition and repetitive high-frequency stimulation generate ectopic spikes from distal axons of mossy fibers.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
