| Outline of Research at the Start |
本研究では、九州の空間が表現する阿弥陀信仰に注目する。研究代表者は、空間が宗教にとって物理的な場を与える意味での補助的な研究対象にとどまらない、宗教を表現し創造する独自の機能を有するものだと考える。
その空間分析の目的は、空間をとおしてこれまで対立する傾向にあった文献学と民俗学とを融合させ、前者の普遍性と後者の具体性との両方の長所を活かし、学際的な阿弥陀信仰理解を提示することである。
具体的には、フィールドワークをとおして現地の空間とそれにまつわる宗教行為とともに特定の宗派を超えた阿弥陀に関する教義書を分析し、九州独自の阿弥陀空間を明らかにする。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The achievements of this project can be categorised into three major areas. The first area pertains to the Amida space in Nagasaki and Saga prefectures, focusing on pilgrimage and Shingon esoteric traditions. The analysis encompassed multiple Buddhist sects, enabling an exploration of how the Amida faith became rooted in its respective regions.
The second area concerns secret spaces and lived religions. Specifically, the project examined four groups belonging to different extents to what we would call ‘Jodo Shinshu’ today. The objective was to elucidate the religious motivations and spaces associated with these Nenbutsu groups, which operated clandestinely for political or religious reasons.
The third area focuses on digital space. In light of the COVID-19 pandemic’s impact on Buddhist practices, the project investigated the transformation of Buddhist ritual spaces and the evolving doctrinal content beyond the spatial dimension.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
本研究課題では、これまで対立する傾向にあった文献学的宗教学と物質的な側面に注目する宗教学の横断的研究方法を提示した。実際に身体をとおして体験する空間の客観的な情報に加え、教義書や地図を並行に分析の対象にしたため、実生活に繋がる文献学的宗教空間研究の可能性を明らかにした。
また、信仰者などが抱える空間理解を参照しないため、特定の信仰に限定せずに宗教空間の構造とその魅力を提示することを試みた。九州には、長い歴史を有する宗教施設が多くあるが、訪問者数が徐々に減少する例が稀ではない。本研究課題の社会的意義は、忘れられつつある宗教空間の情報を共有することと、日本仏教の多様性を明瞭にすることである。
