| Outline of Research at the Start |
近年、戦時中の軍事精神医療に関する研究は著しく進展してきたが、精神を患った旧軍人の戦後に関してはほとんど明らかになっていない。本研究では、（１）戦後長期間にわたって国立療養所で療養生活を送っていた「未復員」と呼ばれる人々の診療録の分析、（２）精神の不調を抱えながらも、長期入院や医療そのものの対象とはならなかった旧軍人の家族へのインタビュー、（３）学際的・国際的な研究交流の促進を行う。
これらを通じて、戦争によって心を病んだ個人の歴史に焦点を当てるとともに、彼らを取り巻く家族や地域コミュニティ、戦後の日本社会全体に戦争が及ぼした長期的な影響を明らかにすることを目指す。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Through analysis of postwar medical records of medical institutions that played a central role in wartime military psychiatry and interviews with family members of veterans, this study clarified the mental and physical illnesses and difficulties in social life and human relations of veterans for a long period of time after demobilization. In particular, interviews with family members revealed that few of them received medical care or welfare despite their various sufferings, suggesting that the burden of caring for them had to be borne by the family.
This study also facilitated an interdisciplinary and international research exchange on the long-term effects of war trauma on individuals and postwar Japanese society through the annual online Interdisciplinary Symposium on the Long-Term Effects of World War II in Japan.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
欧米の医学史研究においては、戦時中の兵士のトラウマとその治療について扱った研究は膨大な蓄積があるが、彼らの戦後について論じた研究は数少なく、本研究では時空間ともに異なる文脈で戦争のトラウマの影響について考察するものである。また、日本における復員軍人の精神疾患の研究についても、従来は医療機関に長期間入院していた「未復員」のみに焦点を当ててきたが、本研究は医療や福祉の制度外に存在していた復員軍人の心身の不調や社会的困難にも光を当てる点が独創的である。本研究は、復員軍人の家族会の活動と連携して行われ、メディアでも広く報道され、社会的インパクトも大きかったと言えるだろう。
