1921年に成立した北アイルランドは、住民の帰属意識がイギリスとアイルランドの間で二分化し、さらにアルスター・スコッツのバックグラウンドが混在する社会的基盤の上に立脚していた。そのような複雑な社会において、北アイルランド出身の詩人たちが自身のアイデンティティをどのように模索していったか検証するのが本研究の狙いである。主に、北アイルランドを作品の主題にすることを意識的に試みた詩人ジョン・モンタギュー(1929-2016)の作品の分析を通して、1950年代から1970年代前半にかけての北アイルランドにまつわる文学的コンテクストとアイデンティティの問題を考察する。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This study examines the relationship between poetic identity and literature in Northern Irish society by focusing on the poetic works and literary activities of John Montague. It examines Montague's attitudes toward the indigenous languages of Irish and Ulster-Scots. It also explores the significance of the reading tours Montague, a Catholic, conducted with the Protestant poet John Hewitt during the Troubles. Additionally, the study considers the literary impact of the rapid development of Northern Irish society in the 1960s and the modernization of the agricultural system, which was initiated during the Second World War. Overall, this study elucidates the nature of Montague's identity in terms of both textual and contextual aspects.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
北アイルランドの文学史において、「アルスター・ルネサンス」の詩人に関しては着実に研究が積み重ねられてきた。一方、その前世代の詩人の試みが北アイルランドの文学の創出にどのように寄与したかについては手薄であることが否めない。本研究の学術的意義は、1950年から70年代前半までの北アイルランドに焦点を当てたことにある。
ポスト・ブレグジットで北アイルランドがイギリスに残留する意義がこれまで以上に問われ、北アイルランドにおけるアイデンティティが、文学作品においていかに表現されてきたかという問題に向き合う必要性に迫られている。本研究課題の成果はその答えの一端を示すことにつながる。
