現代英語における動詞の補部に関する研究を行っている。特に、類義語とされる動詞の補部を比較してみると、動詞ごとに補部にくる語の傾向が異なるという現象がみられる。
本研究では、起動動詞begin, start, come, getなどが補部に形容詞や名詞などを取る場合を例として挙げ、起動動詞それぞれの補部に生起する語のパターンの違いをThe British National Corpusなどの大規模汎用コーパスを用いて量的に示す試みを行う。また、起動動詞によって補部にくる語に違いが生じる現象がどのようなメカニズムで生じているかを語彙の意味の観点から解明することを目指している。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The study examines the noun or adjective phrases that occur frequently as complements of inchoative verbs from a quantitative perspective and the semantic characteristics of these highly frequent nouns or adjectives from a qualitative perspective. Specifically, this study conducts a corpus-based analysis to examine what types of words occur frequently as complements of an inchoative verb and what semantic characteristics these words have. As a result, we found that certain types of meaning of an inchoative verb impose a semantic constraint on the choice of noun or adjective collocates as the complement of the verb. This shows that certain meanings of a verb have a certain effect on the choice of collocates that can be used as complements of the verb.

本研究の成果は、補部や主語に共起する語句、いわゆるコロケーションが、動詞の意味に基づいて選択されることを実証的に示した点にあります。この成果は、従来は英語ネイティブスピーカーの直観により説明されてきた共起語の選択が、動詞の意味からある程度予測可能であることを示唆するもので、英語学習者にとって不可欠な英和辞典や学習参考書におけるコロケーション記述の充実に役立つと考えます。特定の語とそれに共起する語句との有機的な繋がりを意識して、語彙を意味のある連鎖の単位で記憶・アウトプットできるように語彙の記述を充実させていくことで、日本人英語学習者の英語運用能力の向上に貢献できるという点で意義があります。
