Outline of Research at the Start

The proposed research will study rural household incomes in China and how they changed over time from the 1900s to the 1970s. It will compare the occupations, sources of income, and property of thousands of households in hundreds of villages. This is an important period in history when China and much of the rest of the world experienced a transformation from family farming to industrial production. Studying how people adapted to this change will help us better understand China's modern economy as an alternative development path.
