Outline of Research at the Start

本研究の目的は「宇宙再電離」過程の解明である。宇宙再電離とは、それまで宇宙を満たしていた中性水素を主成分とするガスが、宇宙初期に形成された天体の放射によって電離される現象であり、現代天文学・宇宙論研究の最大のテーマの一つである。本研究では国立天文台すばる望遠鏡・欧州天文台 VLT・次世代宇宙望遠鏡 JWST などの大型望遠鏡を用いて観測を行い、再電離の理論モデルの検証や再電離期の銀河の性質や再電離における役割、銀河間ガスと銀河の相互作用の包括的な理解を目指す。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

前年度に引き続き、James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) の観測プロジェクトである「EIGER計画」を推進した。得られたデータのリダクション処理を行い、遠方宇宙の星形成銀河を同定し、各銀河の正確な距離や性質を測定した。これにより、宇宙再電離期における世界最大の分光銀河サンプルを構築することに成功した。この銀河サンプルを用いて、特に、宇宙再電離における銀河の役割に関する研究を行った。具体的には、銀河サンプルと、観測領域に存在する遠方クエーサーの分光スペクトルデータを組み合わせ、銀河の周囲の平均的なライマンα線の透過率を求めた。これにより銀河の周囲で選択的に銀河間ガスの電離が進んでいることを示す証拠が新たに得られた。これは前年度に投稿した主著論文の結果を強化するものである。この成果は招待講演を含む複数の国際・国内会議で報告した。現在、主著論文を準備中である。

また、同じ観測データを用いて、1) 遠方の暗いAGNサンプルの構築と性質についての研究 (Matthee et al., 2024), 2) 銀河周辺物質の金属汚染に関する研究 (Bordoloi et al., 2024)、 3) 宇宙再電離期における超大質量ブラックホールの性質についての研究 (Eilers et al. 2023)、4) 宇宙再電離期にクエーサーの親銀河の性質についての研究 (Yue et al., 2024) などを行った。これらはそれぞれ論文で報告し、2023年度中に出版、あるいは受理された。

観測、データ解析とも予定通り進んでおり、複数の共著論文の出版ができ、また主著論文の準備も順調であるため。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

今後はJWSTによって新たに得られるデータを加えて、解析を進める。また、大幅に増加した銀河サンプルを活かして、銀河の性質による宇宙再電離の貢献度合いの違いなど、新たなパラメータスペースを調査する。さらに、数値シミュレーションの結果との詳細な比較を通し、理論研究への定量的なフィードバックを提供することを目指す。
