Outline of Research at the Start |
After the breakout of the civil war in Syria in 2011, Turkey faced a serious refugee exodus. After a decade, the population of refugees rose to 4 million and they are scattered all over the country from bordering provinces to big cities. The literature so far studied the consequences of this inflow of refugees on economic outcomes, e.g., wages, employment, and housing demand. Yet, the impacts on wellbeing and social capital (e.g., trust and altruism) of both locals and refugees is still unexplored. This project aims to examine it via a multi-focal attempt relying on a large national survey.

Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The project team in Japan has gathered face to face twice in Tokyo and regularly online to discuss research progress. We have outlined ideas for research based on the central theme of the project and the data to be collected from the planned surveys. We have also collected auxiliary data from other resources to use in our joint research papers later. A large literature review is already done and official reports of the organizations about the refugees are collected. We have also collected data about legislative and policy changes about the refugees policy of the Turkish government. The Turkish counterpart researchers has also cooperated in research design and various issues around the research objectives. Both teams worked on the survey questionnaire design. We have also contacted research companies in Turkey for details about the data collection process, ensuring randomization of the data collected, in particular, and the timing of the survey. Based on the suggestion of the research companies, we have decided to conduct the survey after summer since many refugees work in remote provinces as seasonal workers in the agricultural sector. Therefore, we have decided to conduct the survey in autumn of 2024. In the meantime, we are planning to finalize the survey questionnaire and receive feedback from the research company. One of the researchers in the Japan project team is currently in Turkey and cooperating with the Turkish counterpart researchers about joint research. We have also contacted and interviewed some policymakers in Turkey about our research.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
In the original work plan, we have planned to start the survey in the last months of this fiscal year. We have contacted two big research companies and discussed about the time of the survey. We were advised by the research companies to conduct the survey after summer because many refugees work as seasonal agricultural workers and cannot be found in their addresses. Therefore, we postponed the survey accordingly to autumn of the following fiscal year. We have created a survey questionnaire and we will improve it after receiving feedback from the research company. In addition, we have outlined the ideas for research papers and discussed the appropriate statistical methodology in our meetings. The choice of methodology affects data collection process. Therefore, we discussed such methodological issues in detail.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In the fiscal year 2023, (19th~30th months in the workplan), our plan is to conduct the survey with help from a respected research company. After signing a contract, we are planning to accomplish a pilot study first and then conduct the survey in the determined provinces. About half of the refugee population lives in the provinces bordering Syria. In February, a destructive earthquake struck this region. After contacting research companies, we have learned that we can still collect data from these provinces, as we have planned, because there was not much migration from these provinces. In addition to the survey, the principal investigator and the young researcher are planning to visit Turkey to meet up with the Turkish counterparts and to interview various institutions dealing with the refugees and their issues. The Turkish counterpart will accompany them during these interviews. During this visit, meetings with policymakers, specialists, researchers, and NGOs are planned. If possible, focus group meetings with the refugees is also planned.
