Research Abstract |
By employing cultured adult rat neurons and Schwann cells, we investigated the mechanisms of peripheral nerve degeneration and regeneration. The research suggests that galectin-1 is localized to small diameter dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons and Schwann cells and plays a role in GDNF-induced axonal regeneration. Moreover, an immortalized Schwann cell line IFRS1 established from adult Fischer 344 rats retains the fundamental ability to myelinate axons in coculture with DRG neurons and NGF-primed PC12 cells, thereby being a valuable tool for the study of demyelination and remyelination.
