Research Abstract |
Although maritime history has treated seafaring as a solely male domain in the past, it has been recorded that women also went to sea. Only in the late1960s were women first recruited as officer cadets and this was mainly in response to the drop in numbers of young male recruits in Europe, and it was not until the late 1990s, when the industry began to experience serious difficulty in recruiting men as seafarers, did attention turn once more to women. They also showed what women could do when given the chance.
