Who are "Senjumin" Can this Japanese term be regarded as equal to "indigenous peoples" in, for example, the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples To answer this question, one has to reconsider the concepts such as civilization, nation/ethnic group, progress, and the complexity of modern Japanese ideas of race and ethnicity under the strong but not complete influence of Eurocentric view of the world. Using both field research and analysis of literary text, this research project was carried out focusing on each individual voices instead of inclining to abstract discussion of theoretical concepts: interviews in Carib Territory and works of Jean Rhys with both Caribs and Japanese, interviews in Australian Aboriginal communities and debates over their "secret sacred objects," Present Ainu cultural heritage, as well as researches in India, Tahiti, Martinique and Estonia were referred to, in an attempt to accumulate usefulevidences for the political and tempo rly nature of the concept of absolute Others.
