Research Abstract |
This research focuses on the practical and theoretical issues for supporting mother tongue education in Japan, Australia, Canada and Thailand. Classroom management, educational activities, and parents and teachers’ thoughts were studied. We analyzed the importance of the awareness of mother tongues as ‘linguistic resources’, collaboration of schools and families, and some strategies to nurture self-esteem of the immigrant children. We created a website, the first of this kind in Japan, specifically targeting practical support of mother tongue study, in order to disseminate knowledge about mother tongue/ bilingual education and to create an information network.
