Research Abstract |
This research explored the washback effects from the English Listening Test added to the Center Test for University Entrance Examinations on English learning and teaching at secondary schools. It was found that the Center Listening Test corresponds to the can-do statements from the A2 or B1 levels of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). The average listening scores on placement tests administered to all freshmen at one national university in the Kanto area have increased considerably since the introduction of the Center Listening Test. Some positive washback effects were also identified on learning English. Two-thirds of the freshmen in the university showed confidence in their listening ability and stated they had come to focus more on sounds and pronunciation. However, there was little positive washback on teaching English other than teachers spending more time conducting mock listening tests in their classrooms.
