Research Abstract |
The Santo Nino of Cebu is a small statue of the Child Jesus that is enthusiastically focused on in its religion. It is believed that the statue had been made in Belgium and brought by Magellan from Spain to Cebu in the 16th century. It could therefore be situated at the cultural crossroads of the interchange between north and south in Europe, as well as that between west and east. By questioning the reason why Magellan's men brought it with them and the role that it played when a couple of local chieftains converted to Christianity, we researched the meaning of the appearance of the single statue of the Child Jesus, who was not accompanied by his mother, in the early modern age. The reason why Magellan's men brought it with them could be explained by the strong connection between the courts of Belgium and Spain and their political and missionary strategies. The role that it played in the conversion of the local chieftains seems to have been related to Asian mythology pervading the whole southeast region, including the Philippines.
