Research Abstract |
Glutinous rice is said to have partly originated in Northern Thailand where several hill tribes live. They have the rice cake culture reflecting the natural features and traditional culture of each hill tribe.This article deals with the result of researching about the traditional culture of glutinous rice cake, including the naming, ways of making and utensils, ways of cooking and eating in major ethnic groups in Northern Thailand. It also attempts to compare and analyzestheir traditional cultures.The rice cake is mainly made from glutinous rice at their traditional events, particularly on the New Year’s Day. They moved south,, touched and influenced with each other, and their rice cake cultures are also more or less propagated. By dedicating the rice cake made by efforts of everyone to gods and ancestors, people wish well-being and health of all their families and villagers. In the cakes wrapped in bamboo leaves, there are two different shapes, of a male and a female, with intent of Life.
