Research Abstract |
This research explores the representations of the Irish and the Orient in “national tales”, as the cultural other to the English nation. In particular, “auto-exoticism” in terms of characterization and narrative strategies is examined. It is argued that the examples of “auto-exoticism” enable Edgeworth and Owenson, who founded national tales, to vindicate their identity as Anglo-Irish women writers and their cultural location within the United Kingdom. This research also attempts to revise the history of nineteenth-century British and Irish novel, which has put emphasis on realism.
