Research Abstract

Sanya has been acknowledged as “Yoseba (Day laborer market)” and there still prevail many cheap lodging houses for day laborers. Long stay lodgers, mostly public assistance recipients, usually have some kind of health problems. In the “Field survey on health status of long stay lodgers in Sanya”, there were 164 respondents out of25 lodging houses; majority are public assistance recipients and others are pension recipients and laborers. The results show their scores in general social trust and social skills are low. Many have some kind of health problems such as high blood pressure, low back pain/ hernia, stomach/ duodenum ulcer and diabetes; many suffered from overlap disease. Having relevance, many of them showed low scores in health related quality of life scale. Besides, there were many lodgers who apparently need physical and mental support; however, majority of them chose living in lodging houses, rather than living in self-reliant supportive facilities run by organizationslike NPOs. Living in lodging houses allowed them more freedom and self-determination than supportive facilities. Consequently, it would be effective to build a local health care system among lodging houses in order for lodgers to achieve self-supportive living physically and mentally.
