Research Abstract |
Hunan changben(song books) were published in large numbers across almost all of Hunan province in the late Qing and early Republican period. I undertake an exhaustive survey of various editions of Hunan changben of incognito inspections held both in Japan and abroad and analyze distinctive features of their content. I discover the reasons for the emergence of this peculiar cultural phenomenon and the background to the formation of the model of provincial culture to be seen in the circulation of changben with reference to contemporary social conditions and publishing activities, and I examine the position of these texts in literary history.
