AlphaB-crystallin, a small heat shock protein, was expressed in CD31-positive microvessels of proliferative membranes in human diabetic retinopathy, whereas alphaB-crystallin was not expressed in normal retinal vessels, alphaB-crystallin expression was colocalized with VEGF immunoreactivity in proliferative membranes of diabetic retinopathy. Researches on alpha-crystallin toward retinal neovascularization leads to discovery of additional treatments with anti-VEGF therapy, whereby the therapeutic target is not direct VEGF protein itself, but a molecule regulating VEGF degradation.
