Outline of Research at the Start

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

Jorge Alvarez (??-1552) was a Portuguese merchant and ship owner who met Francisco Xavier (1506- 1552) in Malaca in the Autumn of 1545 while Xavier prepared for his trip to Japan. Xavier asks him to gather information about the people and the land of Japan, which he later uses to convince his superiors to evangelize Japan. Alvarez departed for Japan in January 1546 and returned to Malaca in December 1546. Still, he only met Xavier after returning from Sanshoan in December 1547, when he gave Xavier his written report on Japan. His report was the first description of Japan written by a European, and he provides a detailed description of Japanese architecture and the urban environment of the port towns he visited on the coast of Kyushu island. How he describes Japanese architecture is more objective than the later descriptions made by the Jesuits priest. However, Alvarez didn't have access to major cities and was allowed to go up to 10km from the port. Therefore, part of the description of the buildings was based on what he had heard about and not only what he had seen.
Xavier later based his letter on Alvarez's report to ask permission to evangelize Japan. Still, he focused on the Japanese people and did not include descriptions of the architecture and urban landscape. Xavier's letter became famous and was printed and translated into several languages. However, only 20 years after Alvarez's reports, text that contains descriptions of Japanese Architecture was written by Luiz Frois and later by Joao Rodrigues, who described the tea culture and architecture.
