Outline of Research at the Start

Outline of Final Research Achievements

Respiratory dysfunction in acute aortic dissection is thought to result from a systemic inflammatory response, including elevated neutrophil elastase activity. To investigate the anti-inflammatory effects of neutrophil elastase inhibitors in the lungs, we analyzed aortic tissue obtained during surgery using immunohistochemistry, with phosphorylated Stat3 (pStat3) as a marker. Increased inflammation in dissected tissue supported our hypothesis. A retrospective analysis of clinical data was also conducted to assess the relationship between inhibitor use and respiratory function, but no significant differences were found. We are now developing a rat model to further explore the mechanism. In parallel, we analyzed clinical cases to identify risk factors for acute respiratory distress and found that age, D-dimer levels, and the extent of dissection were independent predictors. A manuscript is in preparation.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
