Outline of Research at the Start

This research will analyze the amount of electricity that could be generated in the world by means of unconventional wind energy technologies. The research will identify the regions and conditions in which these technologies have advantages over conventional ones (turbines with horizontal axis).

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

The preliminary assessment of the energy potential at global scale for a representative unconventional wind energy technology was conducted. The representative technology, which was identified during the first year of the project, corresponds to an airborne wind energy system (AWES) using a soft wing (kite) linked to a grounded generator via a tether. The preliminary assessment focused on the theoretical energy potential (annual energy production) of onshore and offshore awes, considering wind speeds at 200m altitude from the ground, but neglecting any land suitability restrictions. The estimated global potential is 150 PWh/yr for onshore AWES, and 34 PWh/yr for offshore AWES.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

The assessment of the theoretical energy potential in terms of annual energy production for an unconventional wind energy technology was performed. The results and analysis are already conducted. The basic data needed to perform the next calculations are already identified and collected.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

The assessment of the energy potential for the selected technology (AWES) will be consolidated, including land suitability restrictions. A sensitivity analysis will be conducted on selected parameters determining the value of the energy potential. A comparison of the results with the energy potential from a conventional wind energy technology (horizontal wind axis turbines) will be conducted. The results will be summarized in a scientific journal paper, and presented in relevant academic conferences.
