本研究では、第一に加茂市立図書館所蔵の坪谷善四郎史料の全容を明らかにし、目録刊行によって今後の研究の利便性を向上させ、第二に坪谷日記・書簡の一部を翻刻することによって明治期の雑誌編集者と著者のやりとりの過程を解明することで、明治時代の雑誌『太陽』の誌面分析を進め、第三に坪谷以外の博文館関係資料にも目配りすることによって、雑誌メディアから見た明治時代の思想文化についての理解を深めていくこととする。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Valuable historical materials once belonging to Tsuboya Zenshiro(1862-1949), who served as Chief Editor at Hakubunkan--one of the leading publishing houses in modern Japan--are currently housed at the Kamo City Library in Niigata Prefecture. These materials include diaries, letters, manuscripts, photographs, and other important documents. Although a few researchers have accessed these materials in the past, no catalogs have been made public, and they have not been effectively utilized. However, Hakubunkan was the publisher of highly significant publications for the study of modern Japanese intellectual and cultural history. Empirical research based on primary sources is essential for advancing such studies. This research project, conducted with the cooperation of the library, compiled a catalog of materials related to Tsuboya. Furthermore, by presenting findings on the provenance and characteristics of the Tsuboya collection, this project has laid the groundwork for future research.

本研究では、多様な坪谷善四郎関係史料について一点一点情報を取り、目録を作成した。坪谷の活動範囲は広く、出版関係だけでなく、図書館、学界、政界、財界、軍人などとの書簡のやり取りもある。これは雑誌編集者として坪谷が様々な人物と面会し、知遇を得た結果であり、書簡にもその痕跡が残されているわけである。また、日記も、一部欠けている年があるものの、長期間にわたって保存されており、これらの資料から得られる情報は、従来の出版史研究はもとより近代日本の文化史研究の上でも重要な知見をもたらしてくれる可能性がある。
目録により史料整理の基盤が整ったことで、今後さらなる同資料群の活用が期待される。
