Outline of Research at the Start

As Japan-based authors writing for publication are under-represented in the literature, this research explores their publishing practices, contrasting practices and experiences between and across fields and subspecialties.

The following research questions are addressed: 1. What are Japan-based authors’ experiences and practices of writing for academic publication? 2. How are authors’ manuscripts evaluated? 3. How do their manuscripts change? 4. What does analysis of the authors’ correspondence show about how their texts change?

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

During the reporting period, thanks to the efforts of my special research assistant, we completed data entry of all of the available medical faculty publication data. In addition, a total of 3 peer reviewed publications that were in part supported by the grant were published. Further, I delivered one invited international presentation and one international conference presentation during the period that discussed my research.
The significance of the research as outlined in the publications and presentations that have resulted from it is that how faculty publication has changed over time across a variety of different publication types has become much clearer. While overall journal publication frequency has only increased moderately, journal language of publication has largely shifted from Japanese to English. Further, publications other than journal articles have all increased for both Japanese and English, which is different from the trends for journal publication.
Our current analyses have been limited in terms of their coverage of years, so now that the full data is available, we are in the process of preparing a manuscript that examines year-to-year changes so that policy changes can be mapped on to how publishing frequency has historically changed.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

My special research assistant made very good time in entering data and I was able to enlist the assistance of a number of different research collaborators to create a more nuanced analysis of the data than I had originally planned.
However, my progress on analyzing the data from individual authors hasn't progressed as smoothly as the publication data available in library publication reports, so in the final FY of the project, while analyzing the full publication data, I also hope to make progress on authors' individual experiences that they have shared with me. To that effect, my special research assistant and I are currently working on a book chapter for publication.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

My special research assistant and I are currently working on a book chapter for potential publication that examines the authors' experience data that we have collected. That has a manuscript delivery deadline of March 31. Once that has been completed, we will turn to analyzing the full publication data that my special research assistant has completed data entry for. We intend to submit that larger research for publication in a prestigious international journal. Further, I have three international conference presentations planned in the current FY, one invited and two vetted. To the extent possible, we will also continue to collect author experience data for further, fuller future publication.
