Outline of Research at the Start

地球上で起こる多くの化学反応は海洋表面やエアロゾル表面といった気液界面で起こることが知られているが、そこでは気相や液中とは異なる反応を示す例が報告されており興味深い。気液界面では界面近傍の分子分布に由来する電場が生じるため化学反応に影響を与える可能性がある。本研究では溶液中の分子のすべての価電子をイオン化できる極端紫外パルス光と50 eVにおいて0.1 eVのエネルギー分解能を備えた飛行時間型エネルギー分析器を組み合わせた液体の光電子分光装置を開発し、気液界面近傍での化学反応においてどのような溶液の電子構造および電荷分布が重要であるかを明らかにする。

Outline of Final Research Achievements

By developing extreme ultraviolet laser photoelectron spectroscopy of liquids, we have established a methodology for studying the electronic states and structures of molecules at gas-liquid interfaces. Technically, we increased the photon energy of the extreme ultraviolet laser light source and introduced a liquid film jet method, making it possible to observe even cations in solution. Furthermore, by comparing with molecular dynamics calculations, we explored the origin of the observed interfacial phenomena and at the same time verified the theoretical model.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

得られた研究成果は気液界面における分子の構造や電子状態を観測する新奇な手法であり、従来の手法とは異なる側面を検出することができる。本手法の確立によって、エアロゾルや、海洋表面のような地球上のありふれた反応場における分子の状態に関する研究が、より多角的に行うことが可能となった。また、得られた結果は、気液界面の分子に対する理論的モデルやその理解にも波及した。
