本研究は，単語連想課題および語彙的プライミング実験にもとづき，日本人英語学習者を対象とした日本語（母語）および英語（外国語）の脳内語彙ネットワーク構造解明のための大規模な単語連想による語彙ネットワークデータベースを構築しようとするものである。
この背景には，海外では英語を中心とした同様の大規模データベースの構築が進んでいるが，日本人英語学習者を対象とした母語・外国語のデータベースは存在しないこと，代表者らのこれまでの研究などから，外国語学習者に特有の言語処理の困難性は学習者のメンタルレキシコン（心的辞書）の構造にあるのではないか，ということがある。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This study aims to clarify the lexical networks formed in the brains of Japanese English learners by constructing a large-scale vocabulary network database based on word association tasks, targeting Japanese English learners. The database seeks to elucidate the brain-based vocabulary network structures in Japanese (native language) and English (foreign language). In selecting stimulus words, we used the CEFR-J developed by the laboratory of Yukio Tono at Tokyo University of Foreign Studies as a basis, we selected verbs and nouns at the A1 and A2 levels of the CEFR-J. This database is a parallel word association database for verbs and nouns that serve as basic words, linking their native language and English as a foreign language.

この大規模データベースによって「学習の方法が語彙ネットワークの形成に与える影響」「語彙ネットワークの特性と言語の流暢性の関係」「言語インプットの質と量が語彙ネットワーク形成に及ぼす影響」「母語と外国語の語彙ネットワークの異同」など，外国語の獲得・処理・学習および第二言語習得の分野におけるさまざまな課題の解明につながり，日本の外国語教育研究を飛躍的に進歩させる可能性がある。さらには，言語学，自然言語処理など工学分野，医学分野における研究の基礎資料を提供するものと考えている。
