| Outline of Research at the Start |
本研究は、ドキュメンタリー写真の見方を刷新することを目的としています。これまでの研究では、ドキュメンタリー写真において、被写体が無力で受動的な犠牲者として描かれてしまう点や、映された社会問題よりもそれを撮影した写真家が注目されてしまう点などが問題視されてきました。しかし、こういった諸々の問題を意識した上で創作された反省的ドキュメンタリーや、抑圧される者たち自身が撮影者となる集団的写真実践はそれほど広く研究されてきませんでした。本研究では、日本と欧米の反省的ドキュメンタリーと集団的写真実践の系譜を比較して提示することで、ドキュメンタリー概念の見直しを試みます。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The Kakenhi-project reconsiders the history of documentary photography by focusing on the activities of the photographic collectives such as the German and Japanese worker photography movement, the Photo League, the All Japan Students Photo Association, and the Hackney Flashers Collective. Comparing and contrasting these photographic practices, the project presents a more nuanced understanding of documentary photography.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
ドキュメンタリー写真は災害、戦争、貧困、差別などの問題を扱うことの多い社会的な内容を含むものであり、倫理的問いは避けられない。写真家と苦境にある被写体とのあいだの非対称的な関係については、これまで議論になってきた。その議論のなかで、苦境にある者たち自身が集団で撮影する実践があることを示し、そしてそれがどのような社会的・歴史的条件のもとどのような目的をもって行われてきたかを分析・考察する本研究は、より多角的にドキュメンタリー写真とその意義を考察するためのひとつの視座を与えるものと考える。
