従来、19世紀から20世紀初頭のドイツ哲学は、ヘーゲル学派によって形作られた「ドイツ観念論」という系譜の支配のもとで、哲学の思弁への傾倒および、それにともなう哲学の孤立化という図式のもとで理解されてきた。しかし、ドイツ観念論と同時代に活動していたJ.F.フリースの哲学の受容に基づくフリース学派および新フリース学派の哲学潮流においては、同時代の自然科学との協働を実現していたことが判明している。本研究では、哲学と自然科学の協働の内実を解明することによって、これまで看過されてきた19世紀～20世紀初頭のドイツにおける哲学と自然科学のあいだの結びつきを明らかにする。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Previous philosophical research has presupposed the schematization proposed by German idealism, which resulted in a public image of philosophy as speculative and isolated from contemporary work in the natural sciences. The reception of Kant’s philosophy, however, supported the development of natural science, particularly through the works of Jakob Friedrich Fries, the rise of the Friesian school after his death, and the twentieth-century establishment of the Neo-Friesian school. This research project thus examines the thought of the Friesian and Neo-Friesian schools to illuminate the collaboration between philosophy and the natural sciences in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

研究活動スタート支援の主要な実績として、単著Confronting the German Idealist Tradition (Routledge, 2023) の出版が挙げられる。本書は、19世紀ドイツ哲学の通俗的なイメージを再考することを目指すものであり、「ドイツ観念論」と同時代に存在した、忘却された系譜の存在に光を当てるものである。この観点から本書は、ヘーゲルと同時代に、ヘーゲルと敵対していた潮流としての、フリースおよびフリース学派、新フリース学派の哲学を再検討することによって、19世紀ドイツ哲学の見取り図を刷新する。
